5 Covert Ways To Learn Spanish For Kids

by Sharon on November 3, 2011

It seems so easy to learn Spanish for kids; in fact it seems to me that kids absorb information like sponges absorb water.

I’m sure we can all look back and wish we had got to grips with a language or learned to play an instrument when we were younger when it would have been so much easier.

So why did we miss out on that opportunity? Well some of us didn’t have the choice and those who did may have given up because they got bored.

So let’s address that right now.

If it’s easy to learn Spanish for kids then the key to success must be in how it’s taught.

We know it’s easy to learn Spanish online for kids and they can fit this in around homework and play but perhaps you want to be more active in their learning and spend time with them learning together.

1. Get yourself into the kitchen with an authentic Spanish recipe.

Make your shopping list together in Spanish and take yourselves off shopping. Have fun practising the pronunciation, rolling the ‘R’s and sounding out each letter clearly.

Cook together to create a truly delicious and memorable meal for the rest of the family to enjoy. That brings me to suggestion 2

2. Find some Spanish music that you love and can sing at full volume.

This is always a winner in our house and it really doesn’t matter if you don’t understand what you are saying. Is there a better way to unwind with your kids than to jump around the room singing your hearts out to a catchy upbeat tune?

Love ballads? Try Jennifer Lopez. Prefer pop? Then Da me mas Gasolina by Daddy Yankee is an absolute must. See how much fun it is to learn to speak Spanish for kids …. and you to boot!

Lift their spirits by playing music in the car or have it already playing for when they arrive home from school.

How much more fun can it be than to learn to speak Spanish for kids away from the stresses and strains of school and the many screens that fill our home these days?

3. Take your pick from popular topics like food, clothes or hobbies and create flash cards together.

In this way they will engage all their senses by writing the word, looking at it and then saying it out loud. Each step goes hand in glove to help commit the new word to memory.

Try getting them to write each word in a colour that will jog their memory. They may have to choose this as they need to make the connection themselves. Having some brightly coloured felt tip pens to hand will help.

4. It couldn’t be easier to learn Spanish online for kids with the many exciting resources available.

From games for toddlers to young adults in their examination years it’s all there for the choosing.

CD Roms are another great option and offer lots of tools to check how well you’re doing. Some kids love to be measured in this way keeping score of how they are improving.

5. Depending on the age of the children reward them for remembering each new word.

The usual rewards tend to be sweets or money but as you are learning a language together a more appropriate reward could be sought.

How about creating a chart to go on the wall that keeps a tally as new words are learned? Maybe more points can be earned for preparing a meal and a few extra points added on for laying the table… and knowing the appropriate words!.

Now you need an incentive. How about, when a goal is reached going out to an authentic Spanish restaurant or even wait until you have enough points for something extra special like a weekend in Spain.

Watch out for cheap flights out of season and stay in youth hostels to keep the price down and the trip memorable.

It’s so easy to learn Spanish for kids, the adventures are endless so have fun and be creative.

Happy Spanish Learning,
