How To Learn Spanish Quickly

by Sharon on January 9, 2012

Imagine what it would be like to finally reach your goal and speak a second language.

You’ve got to wonder why it is that you find is so difficult to master the Spanish language?

Now let me ask you this. Despite your best efforts do you forget what you have worked so hard to learn?

Can YOU limp your way through Spanish text in a book, know each individual word but have no idea what the sentence actually means as a whole?

Do YOU get brain freeze when speaking in Spanish trying to follow the conversation while formulating a response in your head?

Sound all too familiar?

Boy do I know how this all feels?… and on a bad day these feelings would wash over me all at once.

There I would stand.. mouth open, my audience waiting for an intelligent response… and there I would stand!!!

learn Spanish quickly

That’s an uncomfortable memory I want to leave behind. I know without doubt that many of my friends who want to learn Spanish experience the same seizure.

I know this because we have discussed it over coffee many times. We’re all searching for the best way to learn Spanish and of course we’re all impatient and want to learn Spanish quickly. Right?

While living in Spain I decided to treat myself to some lessons. They were very reasonably priced and the tuition was excellent so why was I still struggling? I came away from the lesson more muddled than ever.

‘I knew it was impossible for me to follow the correct rules of grammar while simultaneously trying to follow the conversation let alone formulate a coherent answer!’

All my friends told a similar tale.

I was eventually lucky enough to find an excellent resource that remains the bedrock of my Spanish and really gave me my Spanish legs but more on that little gem in a blogpost another day.

Now I’m not one to give up so I set about solving my dilemma.

My memory was shocking so within a little everything I learnt I forgot!

If I’m honest, at the onset I had wanted to know how to learn Spanish quickly but I soon realised I needed to learn steadily and to be gentle with myself.

This was singularly the trigger that changed the way I thought AND, IMPORTANTLY ensured I didn’t give up.

First things First.

Have YOU ever considered how YOU learn? I am talking directly to YOU here so now I have your attention stop and think for a moment. Think about the programmes and courses you have signed up for.

How are they working for you? Are they serving you well?

Now, let me ask you a personal question. Where would you say your confidence level is right now?

Does the course offer you so much that you can’t see the wood for the trees?

Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? But sometimes you need less information so that you can consolidate your learning

Do you know the type of course I mean? Oh, you have tried them too!

Conjugating verbs, Irregular verbs, Ser Vs Estar,  Por Vs Para, Stem changing verbs, Past imperfect.

YES! Each part makes up the Spanish language but I am the wrong side of 40 and there is no hope for ME that I can learn all this and retain the information. I know me well enough to know that I will become despondent and give up.

And this is where you must be gentle with yourself. Yep! Take the pressure off and accept that you learn not only at your own individual pace that is unique to you but also tap into the method that serves you best.

One size does not fit all! And this is the problem. Until you work out how you learn you may forever be just out of the reach of success.

Let me take you back to the last time you studied. Are you a visual learner? Do you like to hold a book in your hand or are you a techy and love your ebooks? Do mindmaps work well for you or do you use colour as you write on different topics?

I’d like to say that no-one will know this better than YOU but that may not be true…why? Because often we don’t take time to really think this through.. we just struggle on not realising that we could be holding ourselves back.

I’ve even told myself ‘I’m just not clever enough. I want to learn Spanish but I will never achieve it’

Okay..ENOUGH!

To the right of this blog…. Yes, just scroll up a little, you’ll see a FREE PDF that I have put together to help you on your way to discover what could be the best way to learn Spanish for YOU.

I am a passionate learner of Spanish and have found some pretty good ways to help myself that I’ll pass to you. Take a look; I know you’ll find some techniques that resonate with you. Give a few of them a try and get back to me.

Teachers are great but learners really know where the stumbling blocks are eh?!

Come back and let me know how you’ve got along. Perhaps you’ve adapted an idea to suit you, if so please share it so that we can all learn to speak this beautiful language that has captivated us all.

Happy Learning,

Sharon
